awana_clubs_logoWhat is AWANA? AWANA is a proven evangelistic and discipleship tool whose goal is to reach boys and girls with the Gospel of Christ. The word “AWANA” comes from 2 Timothy 2:15 which states, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (KJV) Therefore, AWANA is an acronym for “Approved Workman Are Not Ashamed.” It ministers primarily to children ages 3yrs to 6th grade. 3-4 year olds will be in the Cubbies. The Sparks group will be K through 2nd grade. Finally, the Truth and Training group will encompass 3rd through 6th grade.

How does AWANA work? AWANA typically runs from September to May (during the school year) once a week for 1.5 to 2 hours. It is divided into large group time where there is a time of teaching and gospel presentation, game time in the gym with AWANA games, and handbook time where children learn Scripture verses and repeat them to adult listeners. As the children work in their books and earn awards and badges, the year concludes at an AWANA awards night at the end of the school year where every child and leader are recognized and celebrated.

How Can I Serve in AWANA? There are several roles that are essential for AWANA to be effective.

Commander: This is the head of the ministry. He/She oversees the entire ministry and works a lot with parents. Our Commander will be Julie Rawls.

Directors: Each of the age groups ( 3-4s, K-2nd, 3rd-6th) needs someone to oversee it and recruit leaders. We need at least 3 directors.

Leaders: Works directly with children during each segment of the club meeting. Guides children through their handbook material and teaches Bible story. We need at least 3  leaders.

Listeners: Just listen to children recite verses. We need about 4-5 listeners.

Game Director: Oversees and plans the AWANA games (in the gym) for the different age groups.

Secretary: Maintains all of the bookwork and keeps tracks of awards.
